For accurate approach shots you need to know exactly how far you hit each club. If possible there should be an equal yardage gap between consecutive clubs in your bag. More often than not a player’s clubs have never been checked and adjusted, and therefore, players do not know what the true distance of each club is.
When we check a player’s clubs for correct gapping we use a Distance Caddy, a Doppler Radar System, which measures the ball speed, as well as clubhead speed, which combines with launch angle and spin rate to tell us the exact carry of each shot. This information is provided to the player on a weatherproof card and shows longest carry, average carry, and shortest carry for each club. If the player wishes we can adjust his/her irons to obtain better gapping.
For best results the player should bring new balls of the make and model that he/she uses. The whole process is carried out indoors.
This test and adjustment is critical for wedges because many players want a specific yardage from each type of swing. Our loft and lie machine is kept close to the hitting net so that adjustments can be made quickly and tested immediately.
